INVESTING ≠ PLANNING
When discussing Financial Planning, many people naturally think first of investments. Investing is an important part of planning for our financial future; however, without having a comprehensive plan, you will not know if you are on the right path.
Financial Planning is not equal to investments – it is greater than investments. By taking a comprehensive view of the investment and non-investment aspects of your life, it is easier to see the big picture and thus plan for the future. If you’re like me, you think about your future while working in the yard, driving around town, or when you wake up at 2:00 AM and can’t go back to sleep. Should we remodel the house? What will we do in retirement? Travel? Help a charity? What does the future look like for our children? College? Weddings? The big question is … When you think about all of your dreams and goals, what is your probability of success?
Having a financial plan helps answer those questions and brings all of your Financial Team members together (Accountant, Insurance Agent, Estate Planning Attorney, Investment/Financial Planner). Everyone is working off the same game plan.
Because all aspects of our lives are intertwined, it is necessary to look at the big picture. A few non-investment issues include:
Estate Planning – Do you have a Last Will and/or Trust? Since these are legal documents, you should visit with an Estate Planning Attorney who will be able to walk you through your specific situation. A Financial Planner can help in beginning the thought process.
Insurance – All of the various insurances can be very frustrating and confusing. Why pay for something I’m hoping I don’t use? Whether it be life insurance, disability, liability or long-term care, insurance helps protect us and our loved ones. I know of situations where someone passed away without life insurance and the spouse’s life was changed considerably. A Financial Planner can help determine if you have the proper policies now and when you should consider other policies (ex: Long-Term Care). Some planners do not sell insurance but can point you to agents they recommend..
Planning for your future involves both short-term and long-term planning. In any event, determining the probability of success can provide a peace of mind and confidence for your future. Life is always changing. Therefore, your plan should be reviewed periodically so necessary adjustments can be made.
